ABOUT MOORA MOORA [TOP OF THIS PAGE]
Moora Moora is a co-operative residential community, a diverse group of
people choosing to live together. We live on a beautiful 245 hectare
(600 acre) property on top of Mount
Toolebewong near Healesville, Victoria. The climate at our altitude of 700
metres is temperate, usually about 5oC cooler than the city, with about
1200 mm of rain per year. On clear days we enjoy expansive views of
Melbourne's eastern suburbs and city towers, Port Phillip bay, the
You Yangs, the Yarra valley and the Great Dividing Range.
Three quarters of our land is eucalypt forest, maintained as a wildlife reserve.
We do not allow dogas and cats on the property to protect the abundant native
birds and animals. Lyrebirds are particularly numerous and easy to approach.
One quarter of the land is used for pasture, farming, woodlots, and horticulture.
The principles of permaculture and organics are followed.
We have a plan for thirty homes (most already built), grouped in six small hamlets
or clusters. Each cluster has four to six house sites, common facilities, a vegetable
garden and an orchard. Each cluster has a distinct style that has evolved over time
and reflects the interests and ideas of the cluster members. Most of our dwellings are
owner-built from natural materials, including earth, stone, timber, straw-bale and salvaged
fixtures. We draw on energy from the sun and wind (we are not connected to the main
electricity grid) and minimise the use of fossil fuel where possible. We grow and harvest
firewood for heating and hot water. We enjoy clean water from collected rain and from
natural springs on the property.
